The Centre has a Director of Education and a structured programme for staff development. The recent appointment of a Clinical Fellow has allowed the co-ordination of Medical Student Teaching.
Development in Education will include:
- Further work by the existing Director of Education on a structured programme for staff development that will give the Centre a reputation for excellence in education. The appointment of a Senior Practice Educator will ensure that this happens.
- Expanding the education programme in conjunction with local Educational Psychologists to examine appropriate methodology. SWLEOC will monitor education an implement a system for collecting results, allowing audit and development to be undertaken. This novel process should allow the Centre to be at the forefront of teaching techniques.
- Ensuring that career pathways are set for all staff, including a personal development plan which will be reviewed regularly. Education and Training will embrace multiple aspects including professional education, developing working practices, time management, introspective learning and stress management.
- Providing a programme of “Continual Professional Development” for resident and visiting consultant staff.
- Providing roles for training Surgical and Anaesthetic Specialist Registrars (SpRs) and visiting senior fellows, who will gain specialist experience in joint replacement and Orthopaedic Anaesthesia. SWLEOC will investigate the possibility of some trainees spending a year at the centre. Consultant surgeons will have time set aside for “training lists”- training Junior staff.
- Exploration with St. Georges Hospital Medical School and the London Deanery of the possibility for F1 and F2 grades to rotate through the Centre in supernumerary positions to gain experience in orthopaedics, peri-operative care and new work practices.
- SWLEOC will work closely with the Medical Education Department at St Georges Hospital Medical School to monitor and develop improved methods of education.
- Further developing links with local schools of nursing and physiotherapy.
- Developing a culture of learning by setting up journal clubs, local specialty meetings and National and International SWLEOC- branded academic meetings.
- Developing a reputation for educating staff on secondment from other centres nationally and internationally.
