Following a referral from your General Practitioner (GP), your Orthopaedic Consultant will see you at your Local Hospital. Once you and your Consultant have decided that an operation is the best treatment for you, your Consultant will refer you to our centre, by sending us your details.
Our friendly Schedulers will contact you well in advance of your operation to discuss mutually acceptable dates for your Pre Operative Assessment and also your Operation date. Your Scheduler will send you confirmation of these dates in writing together with a welcome pack, a home assessment form and further information about your operation.
The home assessment questionnaire should be completed and returned as soon as possible as it allows the staff a preview of what your discharge needs may be.
At the Pre Operative Assessment, your fitness for surgery will be assessed by a specially trained Nurse. This will include collecting a medical history, including current medication, a heart rhythm trace, a blood and urine test and an X-ray. Staff will also go through the home assessment form and discuss discharge support if it is required. Many Patients manage perfectly at home without the need for additional support at home.
Should you need support from the Community, the Discharge Nurse will discuss arrangements with your local Primary Care Trust who will assist you with your practical needs when you come out of Hospital.
